Has religion hollowed you out? Has it left you weary and heavy burdened? Do you long to rediscover the simplicity, the innocence, the joy of your faith?

Do you want to make a difference in your world but feel too tired, too burnt out, too overwhelmed to follow through?

If these questions resonate with you, I hope something of my own journey may help.

In the past two decades, I have served as a youth pastor, an assistant pastor, a senior pastor, and an apostolic team leader and missionary. I’ve served in several different countries and I have worked with leaders from multiple different church backgrounds and streams.

I’ve been well mentored by a number of spiritual men and women, and I’ve worked in fantastic teams.

I’ve been blessed to see some wonderful fruit and I’ve worked through my share of failure and disappointment, too. While I’ve experienced the pain of some nasty relational conflict, I have not been left wounded by others.

Yet despite it all, I came to a point where I found Jesus’ call to me so pertinent:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens…” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Of course, Jesus spoke these words to a people benumbed by religion. A people oppressed by a religious system that was intended to be their saving faith.

Yes, I’ve learn to manage stress, overwork and burn-out over the years. But this was not that. This was a realisation that something about my faith had morphed into a system of oppression.

  1. Identify the problem

It’s probably worth pointing out that the word religion is actually a neutral word. It refers to one’s system of belief, and is used in a positive sense in James 1:17.

Religion gets nasty when our focus shifts to the system itself rather than the One in whom we believe.

Not a person, church, a denomination etc.

My motivations.
